About Treen
Treen is a small, family-owned woodworking business based in Salem, Oregon. Treen uses a variety of woodworking techniques to turn sustainably harvested Pacific Northwest timber into beautiful burial vessels. We use Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood and natural materials so that our caskets may be used for natural/green burials, but our caskets may be buried in any type of cemetery (or even one’s backyard, depending on state and local laws).
We use soft woods, such as Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine, which are not only more affordable for us and our customers, but weigh less and decompose more quickly than hardwoods like oak and maple. We primarily use materials sourced from the Pacific Northwest, and partner with other local businesses to support a strong local economy and community. About Meghan & Erik
We are Meghan Ochal (she/her) and Erik de Guzman (he/him), wife-husband co-owners of Treen Woodworking. We started and ran a Certified Organic vegetable farm in Maryland for 7 years, before relocating to Oregon in 2023. We decided to move on from farming, but we had loved running a business focused on sustainability and creating something that helps people. On-farm construction projects, building out a camper van to live in, making our own furniture, and taking some fine woodworking classes led us to woodworking, and we were specifically drawn to creating something meaningful out of sustainably sourced wood.
We love the diverse ecosystems of Oregon, especially its forests, and appreciate how much Oregonians value and respect their rich natural resources and the environment. Personal experiences, as well as our ongoing research, have made it clear to us that end-of-life planning is incredibly important and that we all can integrate sustainability into that planning. We started Treen to help PNW residents who want natural burials to have a local source of beautiful burial vessels.
